NextCycle Michigan’s Micro Scale 3Rs Solution (MICROS) is a grant designed for recycling entrepreneurs, municipalities, businesses, or non-profits who need a little help. While similar to a traditional grant program, the MICROS grant program differs with its simpler application process and more flexible spending opportunities.
The MICROS grants can be used as seed funding for singular projects and are also available to teams applying or accepted to other Innovation Challenge tracks. MICROS seed funding can be used for demonstration projects, equipment, laboratory testing, marketing, community engagement, consulting, and other needs.
MICROS teams are challenged to produce small-scale innovative solutions for the collection, processing, minimization, reuse, or recycling of Michigan’s waste materials that are scalable, replicable, or impact an underserved region.
NextCycle Michigan is a first of its kind initiative from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and the Energy (EGLE) that leverages public and private sector assistance and investment to improve Michigan’s recycling and waste recovery system.
Cycle 1 of MICROS will have up to $150,000 in total funding available. Teams can apply to MICROS for up to $10,000 in reimbursable funds. Teams must be able to spend the funds within 6 months of acceptance. Eligible uses of project funding:
• Marketing & Collateral
• Project/Market Feasibility Analysis
• Project Based Salary
• Consulting Assistance/Legal Services
• Prototyping/Lab Testing/R&D
• Project Related Event/Meeting Space Rental
• Project Related Travel/Lodging
Funds cannot be used for general administration, on-going salary not related to the proposed project, general office supplies, insurance/taxes/debt, ongoing rent for offices/spaces, conferences/tradeshows, land purchases, or food/catering.
Who Should Join
Businesses, entrepreneurs, universities, local units of government or non-profits who need access to small funding amounts to jumpstart their recycling programs and / or businesses. Teams from other Innovation Challenge Tracks are eligible to apply for seed funding from MICROS. Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) are encouraged to apply.
• Applicants to the MICROS Challenge Track must demonstrate both a need for the seed money and a direct and measurable impact to Michigan’s recycling economy.
• Projects must be located in Michigan, though teams can be based anywhere.
