The project “Support to Preparation for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and Private Sector Involvement”, implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP in BiH) and funded by Sweden, invites all interested small and medium enterprises from BiH to apply for participation in the challenge of decarbonization.
With this intervention, they try to identify and involve five companies from BiH and help them emerge stronger from the crisis with smart solutions, and strive to establish sustainable approaches to future business operations through pilot implementation of specific short-term interventions that will contribute to decarbonization of their business operations.
The decarbonisation challenge for SMEs will contribute to the sustainable and green recovery of the private sector in BiH by supporting leading companies involved in the Challenge in:
• Reducing their energy intensity;
• Transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels;
• Greenhouse gas emission controls;
• Air pollutant emission control.
The aim of this initiative is to support companies in devising a concrete approach to decarbonisation that can be further replicated.
UNDP in BiH intends to expand its portfolio of solutions for sustainable economic recovery and support the further transformation of business practices in BiH towards carbon neutrality. Incentive packages in support of economic recovery will only be fair and effective if they support the transition to a resource-efficient, green and circular economy.
Grant Information
• The indicative financial framework of support per company is up to 30,000 KM (with a minimum contribution of the grant recipient in the amount of 30%).
• The aid process will run from April to September 2021.
What will SMEs gain from this process?
The goal of the Challenge is to support companies in devising a concrete approach to the decarbonisation of their business operations.
Once selected to participate in this Challenge, SMEs will be offered:
• Expert assistance tailored to the selected company in order to assess the current status of energy and resource use (assessment of energy losses and potential for change of energy sources, as well as assessment of technological options for overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from their business operations). This would support the preparation of a longer-term roadmap for transformation that will contribute to a more systemic decarbonisation, with measurable indicators of progress;
• Small investments in technology or materials that are essential for initiating or supporting the transformation towards decarbonisation (grant worth up to 30,000 KM per small / medium enterprise) within the framework of sustainability and circularity in business.
This support is transformational in nature and focuses on identifying and introducing new sustainable approaches and business models based on decarbonisation.
Upon completion of the assistance, the following basic results are expected to be achieved:
• For each SME, a roadmap for sustainable transformation has been developed with measurable baseline and target CO2 footprint values;
• Testing of innovative and scalable decarbonisation solutions (at least 5 pilot interventions contributing to decarbonisation in the field of energy efficiency reduction, transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels, control of greenhouse gas emissions from sources in the private sector, control of air pollutant emissions from sources) in the private sector);
• A package of scalable solutions and systemic approaches to decarbonisation demonstrating local practices and sustainability, developed by UNDP for learning and scaling purposes.
